Featured article: Eu(III) and Am(III) adsorption on aluminum (hydr)oxide minerals: surface complexation modeling

In this study we compiled data describing Eu(III) adsorption on three aluminum (hydr)oxide minerals—corundum (α-Al2O3), γ-alumina (γ-Al2O3) and gibbsite (γ-Al(OH)3)—and developed surface complexation models for Eu(III) adsorption on these minerals by employing diffuse double layer (DDL) and charge distribution multisite complexation (CD-MUSIC) electrostatic frameworks. We also developed surface complexation models for Am(III) adsorption on corundum (α-Al2O3) and γ-alumina (γ-Al2O3) by employing a limited number of Am(III) adsorption data sourced from literature.

The Editor-in-Chief

Dr Daniel Alessi

Dr. Daniel S. Alessi

Dr. Alessi is a professor in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alberta and specializes in environmental geochemistry and geomicrobiology. His research group focuses on: (1) understanding the surface chemistry and reactivity of environmental materials such as iron oxides, bacteria, and biochar, to determine their impacts on elemental speciation and cycling in the environment, (2) on the development of methods to extract lithium and other elements critical for the manufacturing of electronics and clean energy technologies, and (3) on improving our knowledge of the water cycle in unconventional oil and gas operations. Dr. Alessi holds the Encana Chair in Water Resources and was elected a member of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada in 2022.
